Vrnjačka Banja: what to see in every season

The central park and the Topla voda spring, the riverside promenade and the Bridge of Love, the Culture Castle and the Japanese garden. A guide to the spa town from spring to snow, with tips for a family trip.

Many people associate Vrnjačka Banja with summer, a busy promenade and the July carnival. But the spa town has four faces: spring in the green parks, a lively summer, an autumn in colours that are hard to describe, and a winter when the centre is quiet and snowed in. And the mountain is just 15 kilometres away, on Goč. Here is our pick of the places worth seeing, with tips for planning an unhurried day in Banja.

The central park and Topla voda

It all starts in the central park. Here is the Topla voda spring, the best known of the town's mineral springs, at 36.5 °C, and here you feel the rhythm of the spa best: walkers with glasses of mineral water, benches in the shade of old trees and the Music Pavilion. Next to the pavilion are the Adventure park and the archery range, which makes the central park the best starting point if you are visiting with kids.

The riverside promenade and the Bridge of Love

The Vrnjačka river flows through the centre of town, with a tree-lined promenade and small bridges along it. It is the loveliest walk in Banja in any season: in autumn the path turns into a carpet of leaves, and after the first snow it looks like a postcard.

On the river is the Bridge of Love, the best-known symbol of the town. Legend has it that the teacher Nada and the officer Relja, separated by the First World War, used to meet on it. Their story inspired Desanka Maksimović's poem "A Prayer for Love", and couples still hang padlocks with their names on the railing.

The Culture Castle and the Japanese garden

Above Topla voda stands the Culture Castle, once the mansion of General Belimarković's family and one of the oldest buildings in town. Today it is a cultural centre with a museum collection and exhibitions, and a good place for an hour in the shade or on a rainy day.

For a quieter walk there is the Japanese garden, opened in 2011 with a donation from Japan: paths, water and little bridges laid out in the Japanese style. Kids usually get through it faster than adults, but they like it too.

Banja through the seasons

  • Spring: the parks turn green, and the Adventure park and archery open in April
  • Summer: the liveliest season, with the Vrnjačka Banja carnival in July and evenings on the promenade
  • Autumn: the best colours and fewer crowds, ideal for walks and guided hikes on Goč
  • Winter: a quiet, snowy centre and Goč 15 km away for a quad ride through the snow

Tips for a family trip

  • Start the day in the central park: everything is a short walk away and kids have room to let off steam
  • Children need to be at least 115 cm tall for the Adventure park, and the zip line is there for younger ones
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the best parts of Banja are explored on foot
  • If you are staying longer, set aside half a day for Goč
  • In season, it is best to book popular activities in advance

If you would like help with the plan, tell us who is coming and how many days you are staying. We will suggest a schedule that combines the spa town, Goč and activities that suit your group.
